FISHING
Brown Trout and Char Fishing. Acclaimed for its fishing the Assynt area of the North West Highlands offers some of the best wild brown trout fishing in the country. Loch Borralan itself is prolifically populated with wild brown trout and the Arctic Char fishing is the best in Sutherland. Fish of over a pound are common with fish of five pounds HONESTLY recorded in our fishing register. Two boats are provided and your stay in one of these modern apartments will entitle you to free bank fishing. To add a little spice to your day tagged fish have been introduced and these, when presented for weigh-in, are worth a bottle of whisky. Permits are available from the BAR next door for both bank or boat fishing on other local Lochs including Veyatie, Cam and Urigil with inexpensive Salmon fishing on Lochs Awe, Assynt and not least, at the head of the Oykel river, Loch Ailsh.

I found this image on the internet - it shows Loch Borralan viewed from the East and emphasizes its remote location. (Remember the Loch IS about a mile long) It must have been a very long hot summer 'cause we're usually a lot greener than this. I think this must date from the drought summer of '76. The Motel is hidden by that bunch of trees on the only green bit on the right hand side and, believe it or not, that road is the main A837, a single track road with passing places.
The river meandering into the Loch can be great fun fishing as it's only very occasionally visited by our anglers who seem to prefer to fish from a boat or the banks around the Loch.
if not taken by myself I'll show an attribution for a photo but the author of this one escapes me.
It could be an RAF pilot - we often get them flying in low along the Loch. (Let me know)

Now here's a lovely happy picture. Frequent visitors to The Loch Borralan Estate Ursula & Wolf Graumann from Hamburg after a day on Loch Assynt with a beautiful, bright 10 pound Salmon. Almost unbelievably caught on a very bright sunny day in a flat calm on May 12th '04. The ugly one is Eric, who owns the Bar right next door with his partner Christine and who dispense wonderful food and drink with great professional aplomb.
Guess who caught it - you can tell by the biggest smile - the redhead. (I love redheads)

On the 31st July a happy Luis Potter outfished the whole family
with FIVE fish to their one during a short boat session

A happy Luis displays some of his catch
Peter Watson, a regular visitor from Cumbria, with a beautiful brownie caught on the the 4th of April in lovely condition for such an early fish.
A recent (9th to 12th May) fishing party of 7 from Stirling were happy to E-mail the following:
Hi Bruce
We had a grand time - thank you very much.
I personally caught and released at least 200 fish in the 4 days I was fishing, but I did spend a lot more time than others on the water. I caught 7 char, releasing 6 of them and retained another 6 brown trout - largest was 3/4lb. Others in the group retained 3 char, and 4 trout all about the same 1/2-3/4lb mark. There was a definite char hotspot in the bay at the east end of the loch around where the white boat is pulled ashore.
Dark olives were hatching on the last day we were there, and dry fly fishing with imitations was a real joy up in the sheltered lee shore. However, any small black flies were taken readily as there was a constant hatch of dark chironomids, even in the howling gale.
We'll be back!
regards
Colin

TOURING. Your apartment is an excellent base from which to explore the whole of the North West, North and North East coasts on a daily basis. All parts of the area can easily be reached from here. This part of the country has a vast amount of the most spectacular scenery to offer to the tourist and yet it remains unspoiled. The roads are some of the quietest and best maintained in the
HILLWALKING. The hillwalker will find this area an absolute dream. It would certainly take many years to get to know all the places that are there to explore. Cul Mor is an easy local walk and indeed this is considered a good beginners hill. For Suilven an entire day must be set aside, although the climb itself is not difficult. Ben More, a Munro, at 3273 ft, will again take an entire day. The scenery from all is breathtaking and it is quite possible to see both East & West sea coasts from some summits. There are many others within a short drive. Stack Polly, with its magnificent views over the Summer Isles, and not least the impressive Canisp and Quinag.
Cul Mor & Suilven from Loch Borralan. Both these mountains are popular with our hillwalkers.

I'm really sorry - the sunsets are SO beautiful I just had to include another one.
This one taken at 8.10 p.m. on the 15th September (with NO funny filters)

POTHOLING & CLIMBING. To those of more energetic persuasion there is some superb climbing to be had in the vicinity and at the other extreme there are some of the UK's longest potholes to explore with a very strong caving club based in Elphin just four miles away.
GOLF. If a round of golf is your preference then a day spent at Royal Dornoch is quite viable or there is a nine-hole course at Bonar Bridge where many of our guests have spent an enjoyable day. Ullapool has now completed its own 9 hole course with clubs available for hire and visitors are very welcome.
